Booking Engine

A Booking Engine (or internet booking engine, IBE) is the software that lets guests book directly on a property's own website. It reads availability and rates from the PMS and writes confirmed reservations back into it.

Why it matters

Direct bookings avoid OTA commission, so the booking engine is central to any distribution strategy. Its conversion rate, its handling of payments and deposits, and how well it presents rate plans and upsells directly affect revenue.

Bundled or standalone

Most PMS vendors ship their own booking engine as part of the platform. Specialist providers compete on conversion rate and design, which is why some operators pair a bundled PMS with a third-party engine.
